FAQ Health Insurance
Student Health Insurance
The German University requires that all students show proof of German Health Insurance at the time of registration. Enrollment at the University is not possible without this. When you sign a policy with a German health insurance company and pay for at least the first month of coverage, you should request a letter from the company specifically designed for registration at the University. This letter proves your coverage.
For students under 30 years of age, full public health insurance coverage costs approximately 53 - 55 Euro per month.
With some companies, students must pay the fees for the entire semester (six months) in advance. With other companies, it is possible to pay the fees monthly through a German bank account.
Examples of public health insurance companies are DAK, AOK and TK.
For more information, we suggest viewing the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) website at:
www.tk-lokal.de and then click for English language.
Health Insurance for those over 30 years of age:
If you are over 30, you do not need to provide proof of health insurance at the time of registration. But rather you must show proof of what is called a "Befreiung", i.e. an exception from the insurance requirement. It is possible to get such an exemption in writing from any of the German public health insurance companies.
We do, however, highly recommend that all students, including those over 30 years of age, have health insurance for the length of their stay in Germany. Such policies for students over 30 are unfortunately very expensive with the public health insurance companies (approximately 200 Euro per month). DAAD offers a slightly more affordable option.

As a student over 30, you might also consider signing a policy with a private health insurance company or looking into a policy from your home country that would cover you in Germany.
